Kingswood Chateau de Chantereine | | Positive points:
• The location of the chateau is ideal, in terms of distance from Calais and near a beautiful beach
• The building and grounds are very attractive and provide a generous green space on which the children could play in the evenings
• The area is safe and quiet
• The trip to the cow farm was excellent and I would definitely go back to this
• Amiens is a wonderful city to visit with lots to see, including the zoo. I would like to repeat this but with a better idea of what we are doing (*see below)
• The chocolate making experience was great and we would do that again.
• The animateur was fabulous with the children
• The trip to the planetarium on the way home was great and definitely worth doing again.
Negative points/to improve:
• The accommodation inside was not of a very high standard. In the boys’ rooms, much of the wallpaper was peeling off etc. In mine and the girls’ room, we had problems with ants invading the rooms through cracks in the windows and going into their beds. Three of the teachers had to sleep in dorms meant for students, so of a similar standard. I was informed that the accommodation for teachers is going to be improved over the winter, so this is something I would like to see in place before any further trips.
• The animateur was not trained at all: he had arrived a few weeks earlier, but had not been trained. Everywhere we went, we got lost and he had no knowledge of the places/activities. We did manage and he worked it out in the end, but it felt disorganised.
• We arrived at the boulangerie at 3.30pm to be told that we were meant to arrive at 1.30pm, and the baker could not accommodate us at that time – so we missed out on that activity. This was not the fault of the animateur, but of the Voyager itinerary.
• When we arrived at the zoo, they said they were not expecting us, and it transpires that I should have been sent a voucher. That took a while to sort out.
• *In Amiens, we didn’t have time to see the floating gardens – we had a quick 20 minutes picnic lunch on the far edge of the park instead. We had to keep stopping/buying drinks in cafes too in order to use the toilets: toilet stops hadn’t been factored into the day so then we lost time elsewhere.
• The market in Le Treport was very disappointing. I understand that Dieppe has a better market for a more authentic experience.
• It would be useful for the trip leader to do a pre-trip recce in order to better organise the daytime activities and choose the most suitable. The days could have been better organised though it is hard to know this until you have tried out the activities/been to the places.
• There was no permanent management on site for Voyager and I feel that this should be improved for future trips.
