Ocean Youth Trust South

Ocean Youth Trust South exists to offer personal development through adventure under sail to young people aged 12-25 from the widest possible variety of backgrounds, the majority vulnerable or disadvantaged in some way. We own the 72-foot sail training vessel John Laing, which we use to deliver sail training voyages for around 450 young people each year. The majority are referred by other charities, voluntary organisations, local authorities, mainstream and special schools, youth clubs etc. Some voyages are for mainstream school groups, Duke of Edinburgh's Award gold residentials and adventure voyages for active young people interested in outdoor education; but we also work with s wide variety of special groups. These include siblings of life-limited children; young people not in education, employment or training, or excluded from school; young carers; children in care; children with physical or learning difficulties; children who have been bullied or bereaved or are from families affected by crime, or drug or alcohol abuse; young people at risk of offending; and many more. The key differences we seek to make include developing confidence, team-working, communication, the ability to cope with unfamiliar situations and deal with setbacks. We also aim to award recognised sailing qualifications and especially to promote successful learning for young people who struggle at school.
