Saving Norfolk's Wildlife for the Future

Although not owned by Norfolk Wildlife Trust, West Runton beach is a SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) and arguably the best site for exploring rock pools and the unique wildlife which are dependent in this harsh and very changeable habitat, in Norfolk. The site is renowned for the West Runton Elephant or Steppe Mammoth which fossil remains were found in 1990. The remains are now in the museum service care but many smaller fossils can still be found on the beach and seen in the cliff face which is fantastic for learning about the geology of the area. The effects of coastal process on the site are also evident and so are the sea defences to help elevate the impact on the coastline which makes our ‘changing coastline’ session idea. Sessions available at West Runton Primary •Rock pool Rummaging •Changing Coastline •Fascinating Fossils
