The visit to Stump Cross Caverns was an engaging and valuable learning experience for our Year 3 pupils. The tour leaders were knowledgeable and enthusiastic, tailoring their talks to support our main topic, the Stone Age. The workshop was well pitched for the age of the cohort, and exploring the caverns generated considerable excitement and interest. The visit also provided a meaningful stimulus for follow-up work, with pupils producing good-quality writing about their experiences. The additional cost of the fossil workshop was worthwhile. Each pupil took home a clay mould of a fossil they had made and a small bag of fossils they had excavated. This ensured that everyone had souvenirs from the visit without the additional stress of taking the group into the gift shop. For future visits, staff should be aware that the approach to the venue involves bumpy, winding roads. Parents of children who experience travel sickness should be advised in advance so that appropriate arrangements, including any usual travel sickness medication, can be made in line with school procedures.

Amazing place to learn about rocks and really brings the topic to life. The children still talk about the trip months later.

Wonderful trip - guide was amazing, very knowledgeable and aimed at the level of the children. Lots of hands on activities and the trip into the caverns was breath taking for the children - excited going, excited when there and excited to write about it back at school. I would recommend highly and definitely take a class of children again. Stump Cross Cavern staff were great, met us off the cave and sully supervised throughout the trip. Lots of key vocabulary used throughout tour of caves, linked to science ,history and geography.
