2000 years of history are waiting for you to explore

The Roman Baths is one of the finest historic sites in Northern Europe.

Once the site of one of the great religious spas of the ancient world; the people of Roman Britain came to the site to worship the goddess Sulis Minerva and bathe in the waters of the natural thermal springs, which still flow with hot water today.

Today visitors can explore the Roman Baths complex, walk on the original Roman pavements and see the ruins of the Temple of Sulis Minerva. The museum collection, located next to the bathing complex, includes a gilt bronze head of the Goddess Sulis Minerva, and other Roman artefacts.

In the Roman Baths Clore Learning Centre, school groups can take advantage of a range of new interactive learning sessions. Children can dress as Romans, handle original artefacts, investigate Roman building technology and find out about the inscriptions the Romans left behind. There is also dedicated storage, accessible toilets and a lunch room. They also have the chance to try archaeology, excavating replica Roman objects in an underground ‘investigation zone’. After this, children walk in an underground tunnel amongst in-situ Roman remains to enter the Roman Baths through a Roman doorway!

Is there parking nearby?

There is no parking at the Roman Baths but there are a number of car parks within easy walking distance. There are also several Park and Ride services on the outskirts of Bath which drop off in the city centre. For information on coach drop-off and parking in Bath see

Are the Roman Baths fully accessible?

Lifts are available and 90% of the site is accessible to wheelchair users. Because the Roman Baths are six metres below street level, there are unfortunately a number of steps throughout the site. We have four lifts on site and handrails in many places, but to access the entire site, you will still need to climb some steps. Carer or companion is welcome to join a ticket holder free of charge. To book your carer or companion ticket, please select a free carer ticket when booking online

More details are available on our accessibility page.

Is The Roman Baths Clore Learning Centre accessible

The Centre is fully accessible with a lift to all floors. Mult-sensory activities cater for all abilities, and our facilities include an accessible bathroom with a hoist.

Can I swim at the Roman Baths?

Unfortunately because of the quality of the water it would not be safe to swim here.

How sustainable are the Roman Baths?

We seek to reduce our carbon footprint in many different ways including using energy from the hot spring to heat our buildings and using energy-efficient lighting.
