The Evolution Workshop was well-led and linked perfectly to our science topic. While the rest of the staff were very kind and polite, they didn't seem to know where education sessions needed to be - we were misinformed on both the pre-trip site visit and upon entry on the day! On Thursday 14th of July Year 7 and 8 went to the Natural History Museum. The students were fantastically behaved and were in awe of the beauties that were inside the museum. They travelled around the various zones exploring and interacting with each theme. In the red zone they took a journey through the spectacular Earth sculpture and found out about the tremendous forces that shape our planet. This included learning about volcanoes and earthquakes, human evolution, discovering minerals, gemstones and rocks as well as experiencing an earthquake simulator. From dinosaurs to mammals, they explored the amazing diversity of life on Earth in the Blue zone. This also included fishes, amphibians and reptiles. Seeing in real life quite how epic and ginormous a blue whale is was a real highlight. Travelling through the green zone we were wowed by the whale skeleton hanging impressively from the ceiling in the beautiful Hintze Hall. The students looked at birds through the ages, creepy crawlies, minerals and fossils. On a hot day, hanging out in the wildlife gardens in the orange zone was a welcome treat and tranquil haven for plants and animals. It truly was a super day with some super students! Great experience! (February 2022 - Primary School)

The lunch room and cloakroom provided was excellent. The staff were well organised when we arrived and took us straight to the school area. The museum itself was accessible for our children and had a range of exhibits related to our learning, as well as interactive displays to bring the learning alive. (January 2022 - Primary School)

The trip itself was really good and the children had a lovely day. When we go next year, we need to ensure we have a workshop booked so that they are not walking for as long. Likewise, we need to schedule a longer time for the children to complete the activities in the different zones. (January 2022 - Primary School)

(January 2022 - Primary School)

The sessions were changed to longer which meant that more people were on the ice. Our pupils found this busy at times. (December 2021 - Primary School)

(October 2021 - Secondary School)

We were met by a friendly NHM staff member who escorted us to the schools area where I was very impressed with the cleanliness in the picnic area and especially the toilets! The children were able to enhance their knowledge of classification and evolution as well as finding out more about earthquakes and volcanoes and dinosaurs. (October 2021 - Primary School)

A great trip for this age group. They were young enough to enjoy exploring the galleries in between our planned sessions with awe and wonder,, yet old enough to have the stamina to walk around without complaint. Museum was much emptier than previous visits (perhaps due to coronovirus?). Day was smooth and both the Volcano show and the LEGO workshop were really excellent. The children had a great day. (February 2020 - Primary School)

Fabulous for this unit of inquiry - and free! (February 2020 - Primary School)

Brilliant visit. The Emergency! Volcanoes and Earthquakes show was interactive and the presenter was very good with the children. The organisation from NHM was great. There was someone to meet us when we arrived and the escorted us to the correct area. As we toured the museum there were different hands on experiences for the children and these were lead by enthusiastic and informative members of the NHM team. The volcanic rocks display by the earth section was fantastic but not all of our groups ventured there. Maybe there needs to be a sign in school reception where you can find hands on experiences that day? (February 2020 - Primary School)

Fantastic resources and facilities (February 2020 - Primary School)

Excellent displays, lots of interactive opportunities, covered lots of the course content particularly for GCSE students. Students enjoyed their learning. Difficult to find a quiet space to brief the students though. (February 2020 - Secondary School)

Due to an issue with lunches, we didn't get as much time in the Museum as we expected. We were hoping for 2.5 hours, but it ended up being around 30-45 minutes. I feel that the visit was a great addition to the trip as it worked as a jumping off point for discussions on technological changes during the rest of the project week, but more time there would have helped. Fantastic! (December 2019 - Secondary School)

Excellent resources, especially when learning about fossils in Britain and people that we associate with fossils in UK - Mary Anning, Charles Darwin. Great exhibitions, children really enjoyed it. For future reference, it would be even better if we have booked the workshop, however these need to be booked in advance (at least couple of months before). Lunch hall was booked but 1.00 pm - this was late for the children, next time preferred time 12.00 (December 2019 - Primary School)

(September 2019 - Secondary School)

It was very busy in the education area on the lower floor and it was difficult to accommodate our school amongst the others. However the museum was a wonderful place to explore. Due to the traffic we were a little late so some classes missed out on their activities that had been booked. The museum did not have the capacity or resources to change anything for us. Traffic and timings will always be an issue for schools that are not in the vicinity therefore a contingency plan would be appreciated by teachers. The museum is fantastic for hands on activities and the staff walking round with artifacts were brilliant with the children. (September 2019 - Primary School)

It brings what could potentially be quite a dry area of science to life. A highlight for us was seeing the actual Icthyosaur Mary Anning discovered in the 1800s - we wrote newpaper reports about the discovery! The children loved seeing the evolution of humans also, and began to understand the importance of fossils in understanding evolution. (April 2019 - Primary School)

Excellent museum and knowledgeable staff. Discover guide was very good and well worth buying. The only negative was that they didn't have water taps which students could use to refill bottles. This was disappointing - there was one but it was a faint dribble and considering they often have 1400 students in a day - insufficient. (November 2018 - Secondary School)

Great place for the day to stimulate the children's interest in our writing unit. A few of the exhibits are dated and dusty and need an overhaul however the children loved the hands on areas such as evolution and earth. (June 2018 - Primary School)

The Natural History Museum is a good place to take a year 1 class and lots of the exhibits and signs were well tailored to the children's needs and age. However, I was less impressed by the quality of the activities/workshops organised by the Natural History Museum schools team. Our 'Explorers and Other Animals' activity was simple to book, but upon our arrival, I was informed that our activity had been cancelled due to a lost key for the resource cupboard. I was disappointed by the disorganised nature of the school dining area; we were kept waiting for at least 15 minutes before we could be assisted by a member of staff and could be allocated a place to put our bags. Overall, the layout of the schools area and museum is perhaps best suited to older children. (December 2017 - Primary School)

The lunch room and cloakroom provided was excellent. The staff were well organised when we arrived and took us straight to the school area. The museum itself was accessible for our children and had a range of exhibits related to our learning, as well as interactive displays to bring the learning alive.

January 2022 - Primary School
The trip itself was really good and the children had a lovely day. When we go next year, we need to ensure we have a workshop booked so that they are not walking for as long. Likewise, we need to schedule a longer time for the children to complete the activities in the different zones.

February 2020 - Primary School
Fabulous for this unit of inquiry - and free!

February 2020 - Primary School
Brilliant visit. The Emergency! Volcanoes and Earthquakes show was interactive and the presenter was very good with the children. The organisation from NHM was great. There was someone to meet us when we arrived and the escorted us to the correct area. As we toured the museum there were different hands on experiences for the children and these were lead by enthusiastic and informative members of the NHM team. The volcanic rocks display by the earth section was fantastic but not all of our groups ventured there. Maybe there needs to be a sign in school reception where you can find hands on experiences that day?

Excellent resources, especially when learning about fossils in Britain and people that we associate with fossils in UK - Mary Anning, Charles Darwin. Great exhibitions, children really enjoyed it. For future reference, it would be even better if we have booked the workshop, however these need to be booked in advance (at least couple of months before).

Loads of information and space. Could easily have 2 days at the attraction to see it all properly. It was very busy and sometimes hard to find your way around.

November 2018 - Primary School
Very accommodating - free entrance and plenty of space to have our tea!

Excellent museum and knowledgeable staff. Discover guide was very good and well worth buying. The only negative was that they didn't have water taps which students could use to refill bottles. This was disappointing - there was one but it was a faint dribble and considering they often have 1400 students in a day - insufficient.

Great place for the day to stimulate the children's interest in our writing unit. A few of the exhibits are dated and dusty and need an overhaul however the children loved the hands on areas such as evolution and earth.

A great experience for the children. The staff were friendly and welcoming. All the work shops were planned and delivered really well.

May 2018 - Primary School
Great venue, good picnic facilities. Toilets cleaned and well-maintained, staff efficient. Talk we booked was good, but children struggled because it involved standing after a lot of walking.

December 2017 - Primary School
