YHA Langdale

Description

Huge, labyrinthine and with a National Trust arboretum on the doorstep, YHA Langdale makes any group visit feel magical. This atmospheric Victorian mansion has space for over 100 people, a flagstoned meeting room located in the cellar, and endless period charm. School trips can study biology and geography on site or get involved in a range of activities offered by the hostel, including archery, shelter building, guided walks, fire making and team challenges. Walkers will love having Loughrigg Fell, Silver Howe and the Langdale Pikes on their doorstep.

Boasting a one hundred and forty year-old oak panelled Great Hall and adjacent Drawing Room, with stunning views down to Lake Windermere, Langdale is the centrepiece of the historic High Close Estate which includes sixteen acres of National Trust aboretum, the secluded and beautiful Low Wood and Loughrigg Terrace on the doorstep all waiting to be explored. Enjoy group catering including breakfast, lunch and dinner, or enjoy a bottle of local ale from our licensed bar. And don’t get us started on our view.

YHA Langdale is a perfect base for walking groups and field trips, as the fells are literally just outside our door. Take a leisurely walk to unique attractions like the Elterwater Merz Barn, or visit tourist favourites like the Grasmere Gingerbread Shop. Adventure seekers are also spoilt for choice, with challenging mountain bike routes, spectacular climbing spots and thrilling watersports nearby.

When we arrived there were insufficient staff to cope with our party. There were two members of staff only. YHA had to draft in staff from other local hostels, I believe the centre manager is currently off work due to illness. Once there was a full compliment of staff by Wednesday things improved. There seemed to be a shortage of meals to begin with and it was hard work having to keep having to request extra sandwiches as orders were often wrong. The activities provided by YHA Langdale were not delivered with any energy or enthusiasm. The venue was stunning and the accommodation was fine in terms of the rooms and cleanliness. To be fair the staff they were working under pressure due to staff shortages but it was hard work having to keep requesting that our needs could be met. (May 2022 - Secondary School)

(April 2020 - Secondary School)

Very helpful. Great accommodation with lots of space for the children to run around (February 2020)

A great venue and stunning location. Great value for money for a 4 day residential. (May 2019 - Primary School)
