Clearwell Caves

A great underground adventure

Description

Discover the amazing caverns at Clearwell, set in the beautiful Royal Forest of Dean. You wander through nine impressive, well lit natural caverns connected by winding passageways and going down 100ft underground. Fascinating and fun guided tours can be pre-booked. The caverns have beautiful colours due to iron minerals in the rocks and they are also a constant 11 degrees, great for cooling off if the sun becomes too much! There are displays of tools and equipment used by miners, including young children, over the past 4,500 years, until 1945 when deep mining finally ended. TV companies love the atmospheric caverns and have used them for recent episodes of Dr Who and Merlin. You might even meet the resident ghost – the old man of the mine!

For a fantastic adventure small groups can book a caving activity. These trips go well beyond the public pathways, seeing features and workings exactly as the miners left them. The trips involve crawling, scrambling and getting dirty making them an exhilarating experience.

(February 2024 - Secondary School)

Children loved following the story - great discussion and questioning. Raised awareness of 'caves' and how they were used. (December 2023 - Primary School)

(June 2023 - Primary School)

(May 2023 - Primary School)

We didnt go on this trip (February 2020 - Secondary School)

Well organised. Good value for money. (January 2019 - Primary School)

Although we enjoyed the trip we felt that the toileting facilities need to be made more child and disabled friendly. The group we took to the caves were primary age from an SEN school with a couple who needed to be changed. The toilet space we had to use was very cramped. Also handrails at the sides of the walkways would be a good idea. (January 2019 - Primary School)
