Field Studies Council - Slapton Ley

Leading Provider of Geography and Science (Biology) Fieldwork

Description

The Field Studies Council is a charity that aims to bring environmental understanding to all. We believe the more we know about and take inspiration from the world around us the more we can appreciate its needs and protect its diversity and beauty for future generations.

One of the many ways we do this is by providing well-designed, expertly delivered educational experiences for school groups, set in some of the UK's most stunning locations. Each year over 3,000 school groups, from key stage 1 to university level, visit our centres for geography or science (biology) fieldwork and cross-curricular environmental activity courses.

Field Studies Council's Slapton Ley Centre is located on the Start Bay coast and surrounded by Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve. The Ley is the largest natural freshwater lake in the South West. It is separated from the sea by Slapton Sands (a barrier beach and shingle ridge). The surrounding coastline, nearby coastal towns and Dartmoor National Park provide unrivalled opportunities for field courses.

The FSC in Slapton is a highly appropriate venue for Geography and Biology fieldtrips. Feedback from staff that have been before state that there have been cost cutting measures put in place by the centre. The service they provided was valuable, but affordability may be a consideration in future. (October 2024 - Secondary School)

Outstanding tutors with our group. They had a nice way with the children and were very helpful. They made for a great double act, complimenting each other really well with their styles of presentation. They regularly gauged our needs and where we were at and responded accordingly with high impact tuition/presentations/demonstrations which were high in clarity. They are dedicated and meticulous and were of great help to us staff and our students. They were a pleasure to work with and if we return to Slapton would be delighted to be assigned the same tutors again. Thanks so much. (December 2023 - Secondary School)

Accomodation was basic, clean and comfortable, with accessible and well provided communal spaces for evening teaching and relaxation. Food was nutritious, locally sourced (sustainable), plentiful and hearty! Course was well tailored to our syllabus requirements and the experience of the environment has provided a classic case study which will be invaluable to 1/4 of their A2 exams. IB students were able to access and measure an interesting river system to conduct and collect their IA data on. (September 2021 - Secondary School)

Ensure tick removers are taken, students should be encouraged to bring a DEET based insect spray, this should be spayed on legs and waist band to discourage ticks. Also ensure spare rooms in dormitories are locked, as possibility of students going into rooms is present, though we realised this prior to the students doing so, it could compromise a fire drill/students safety in the event of a fire. (June 2018 - Secondary School)

An excellent A Level course which really advanced students' learning and facilitated the coursework. (May 2018 - Secondary School)

The FSC staff are exceptionally knowledgeable about the A Level NEA fieldwork and provided a wealth of information to our students. This allowed them to collect a range of data which they can now use to form their NEA. (April 2018 - Secondary School)

Really excellent centre, another tremendous visit. Julie continues to go above and beyond to help ensure our trip meets the specific needs of our course + school. (January 2018 - Secondary School)

Excellent teaching , food and accommodation. (December 2017 - Secondary School)
